On Friday, 4th February 2022 we took part in in NSPCC Number Day with the theme of ‘Dress up for Digits’ raising £47 for the NSPCC. Thank you to everyone who kindly donated.

Every adult and child in school participated in this full-day event, starting with a warm up and ’10 at 10’ which was a lively 10 lap run around the school playground which every child participated in at their own pace. This ensured that the children warmed up their minds and bodies, ready for the numerous events of the day. The children were excited about the competition to find the longest carrot or heaviest potato with a lot of lighthearted rivalry taking place amongst them during the day!

Class 1 explored Number Day in a variety of ways. Our youngest Early Years children explored numbers with the Number Blocks by making towers and adding eyes to their number block people. Reception children have taken part in a ‘number bonds to 5’ challenge using a variety of exciting loose parts. In year 1 the children have played place value and number games, finishing the day with a quiz. I can also say, that everyone (even the grown- ups) have enjoyed weighing their potatoes and measuring their carrots to find out who had the winning vegetables!!

Class 2 worked collaboratively to produce our own mathematical board games. We had some interesting themes such as farm yards, rugby players and horses jumping fences to get to the finish line. The children then created their own maths questions to be asked and solved, if players landed on certain squares. We are now keeping those games in the classroom for us all to play on wet playtimes (hopefully not too many of those!).

Class 3 were asked to give their own ideas for number-related activities they wanted to do for this special day. They chose to play their favourite game 'The Pirate Game', which is a coordinates game similar to battleships. It involves the children being able to read coordinates and also calculate money/cash that they accrue throughout the game. The children also chose to complete crosswords relating to number and solved some tricky codes locking padlocks. Finally, we finished the day with Class 3 making their own number board games. It was a brilliant day! At the end of the school day, the winners were awarded their well-deserved prizes in a special assembly.  The winners were Henry, Halle, Mary, Evie, Rhys, Edith, Cece and Millie.
