On Saturday, 11th January, I (Sophia from Class 3) attended Barlby Leisure Centre to box in a boxing match against my opponent, another young girl from Wakefield. Our match was the first of the evening with over 306 people in the audience to watch us perform. I was a little bit nervous, but I went up anyway and did the best that I could. There were 3 rounds to the match, at 1 minute each. I won the match and was presented with a big trophy and was so proud of myself. I am looking forward to my next match on the 1st February.
During boxing matches the referee is in control and can intervene to stop the match if he thinks that an opponent is struggling to defend themselves, or becomes overpowered by their opponent. Also, as a boxer I am aware of the risks involved when boxing and I am prepared to take them, so that I can enjoy this sport. Part of my training is to learn to ‘slip’ which is a technique used to dodge your opponent to avoid their punches.
We look forward to hearing of Sophia’s next match and wish her the best of luck.
