About Nursery

Welcome to Nursery! Our teacher Miss Nunn teaches us during the week. We are also very lucky to have Miss Lindley, Mrs Alnajjar and Mrs Bowmer who help us in our learning!

Exploration and play are at the heart of our learning in Nursery. We define our own day, steering our own learning whilst exploring and playing in the amazing setting that we have at Barlow. We learn to develop physically, emotionally, and socially before moving on to expressing ourselves through Art and Design, developing confidence in Literacy and Maths and learning to understand our world.

We are a happy and friendly Nursery, always welcoming parents, and carers to come and talk to us and see how we learn here at Barlow. We encourage families to engage with our ‘Learning Journey’ which begins at the start of Nursery using ‘Tapestry’. Here we celebrate all of the achievements at school, and we give the opportunity for families to add other achievements outside of school. We also communicate with families using ‘Marvellous Me’ to celebrate the highlights of our day.

In Nursery, we are very passionate about the outdoors, and you will see us outside in all weathers, wrapped up in winter and with our sun hats on in summer! We enrich our learning outdoors and are encouraged to learn through exploration, investigation, and enquiry, using play and imagination to develop socially, emotionally and physically.

In Nursery, we love exploring and learning, becoming confident, resilient, and curious learners, ready for anything!

There are 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

During the session, the children ‘free-flow’ between the different areas of nursery and are supported in their learning by the staff in the environment. Sometimes our staff will set up activities for the children to explore and encourage the children to take part (adult led activities). Most of the time the children will select their own resources and play activities (child initiated activities).

Children can access areas of provision both inside and in the outside area. Children are always encouraged to look after the resources and tidy up after themselves and to share and play collaboratively where appropriate. There are group times during the session where children listen to stories, sing songs, have circle time and play simple number and phonic games. They also benefit from story time before going home at the end of the session.

When your child joins our nursery we will begin to create their ‘Learning Journey’ on Tapestry. This is a celebration of everything they achieve both at home and at school. Parents are very much encouraged to engage by adding their own entries to Tapestry. We add our written observations and photographs of the activities that they have taken part in at nursery which continues through their Reception year and is a wonderful record of your child’s learning to keep and treasure.
