Changes to Children & Families Ministry at St Wilfrid’s from January 2022
I am delighted to share with you some changes to our ongoing ministry among children and families from January 2022!
These changes have come about for 3 key reasons:
-As a response to the significant shifts in how the majority of families linked to St Wilfrid’s are increasingly engaging with Church.
-A recognition that it is critical for the present and future life of St Wilfrid’s that we do all we can to be missional in our approach to families’ ministry - reaching out to families in our community with the love of Jesus by offering them accessible and relevant ways to experience Church.
-To reflect the reality that we must deploy the small number of volunteers in this ministry strategically and with care, so they are able to minister effectively and sustainably as we move forward. They are a wonderful, but scarce resource!
The Families and Children’s Team, Alive@5 Team and I have decided that this important area of our church’s ministry should continue to focus on Friday Fun Club and Alive@5 (where there are already strong links being made between the groups), as well as a reinvigorated children’s area in church, which will be called “Play & Pray”:
-Fun Club: will continue to meet on Fridays for pre-schoolers and their parents/carers. It’s a lovely, relaxed environment for folks to encounter Church and to form friendships.
-Alive@5: this will move from one Sunday per month to 2 Sundays- the 1st and 3rd Sundays. Same time, 5pm. Like Fun Club, this is a really warm, relaxed context in which we’re offering vital opportunities to grow community and be Church in a way that is relevant to our younger families. (*Please also see note below re our Inspire service.)
-Play & Pray: the children’s area at church will be refreshed to include more intentionally creative, worship and faith related activities for parents/carers to do with their children during services. This will replace Junior Church provision on Sunday mornings.
-Family Communion service: as now on the 2nd Sunday at 10.30am this will continue to provide a more accessible, less formal worship experience once a month in the traditional Sunday morning slot for families and the whole St Wilfrid community.
A huge thanks to all those who have a vision for our ministry among families, and who are passionate about seeing this vision become a reality.
Please pray for them as they exercise this ministry on behalf of the whole St Wilfrid’s Church family.
* For those who enjoy our Inspire contemporary worship service, or if you’d like to check it out, this will continue monthly but will now take place on the last Sunday of the month (normally the 4th Sunday, occasionally a 5th!) at 5pm in St Wilfrid’s hall, as before. This means the first Inspire of 2022 will be on Sunday January 30th.
