Fire of London

It is no coincidence that following on from the topic ‘People Who Help Us’ andtheir visit from the local Fire Brigade that Class 1 enhanced their Year 1 studies about the Great Fire of London when they be joined Chapel Haddlesey School to attend a workshop provided by Alfresco Learning. The begin by investigating the wattle and daub building method used to build houses in 1666. They then worked collaboratively to build their own wattle walls using sticks and then finish them off by hand with their own sticky daub mixture!

Once our structures are built we reflected on the weather prior to The Great Fire of London and discussed how this, combined with the materials, will have impacted the strength of the flames!
‍Next the children experienced fun and movement with our very own Great Fire of London games.
Finally we will took a closer look at Thomas Farriner, his bakery and that fateful night when he failed to put out the flames of his oven. We then took pity on Thomas Farriner and agreed to build him a new model bakery! For this part of the workshop children investigated different materials and aimed to build a bakery that was strong & waterproof to help Thomas Farriner get back to baking his bread!
